Joseph West was the son of John and Sarah Pearson West. Joseph's brother, Benjamin was youngest son of John and Sarah Pearson West and Benjamin West was a famous painter.
According to the West DNA project, Joseph first married Elizabeth Hazard. No other information is known about Elizabeth and no children are documented from this source.
Joseph married Jane Owen, daughter of John and Hannah Maris Owen on Mary 6, 1740 in Chester County, Pennsylvania.
Joseph and Jane moved to Fairfax County (now Loudoun Co, VA) around 1748. By 1780, they had moved to Pittsylvania County, Virginia, and aquired land situated on Straightstone Creek. The early land records were signed by Thomas Jefferson, Governor of the Commonwealth. By 1785, Joseph had aquired more than 1100 acres in the same area.
According to the genealogy booklet "Joseph West and Jane Owen" by Celeste Terrell Barnhill: "The D.A.R. Magazine for March, 1930, contains a list of person of Pittsylvania County, VA, who furnished provision for the army during the Revolution, under the Commisioners Provisions Law. In the list is the name of Joseph West. There were only two Joseph Wests in that county at that date, one being Joseph Sr. and the other Joseph, Jr., who was a soldier in the Army and not in a position to furnish provisions. It follows, therefore, that his father, Joseph, was the man thus listed."
It appears that Joseph may have over-speculated or otherwise mismanaged financial dealings based on the his wife's letters and the exclusion in the will of Jane Owen West's father, John Owen.
Joseph and Jane had 10 children.
- Isaac (1741-1821) married Roxanna Lewis
