About Joseph White [Convict "Neptune" 1820]

Baptism: 21 June 1795

On the 1st May 1810, Ann White and son Joseph, were tried for stealing a half a hundred weight of hay from a rick on 16th March 1810. Then on the 23rd April 1811, they were tried for stealing one ewe sheep on 21st December 1810. According to the Gloucestershire Record Office, Ann and son Joseph were condemned, reprieved, and no further sentence received.

Joseph came to Australia as a convict on the ship 'NEPTUNE', leaving England on the 2rd March, 1820, and arriving in New South Wales, Australia on the 16th July, 1820. He was then 25 years old. He was 5 foot 4 inches tall, had fair, ruddy complexion, brown hair and hazel eyes.

The 'NEPTUNE', a product of Calcutta shipyards was built in 1814, class AE!, and 644 tons. Up to 1820 the prisoners were furnished with 3 shirts, 2 pair of trousers, a pair of shoes and other warm clothing. A decade later the clothing for a voyage, including flannel underclothes and raven duck overalls. As the clothing was generally of poor quality it was usually worn out by the time Australia was reached, and additional clothing was shipped in each convict ship and the prisoners completely outfitted before being landed at their destinations.

In 1820 it was officially announced that on application to the Principal Superintendent of Convicts, prisoners by two ships would receive trifling sums... ten pence half-penny in one case, and two shillings twopence in the other... to compensate them for rations short-served during the voyage.

The trip that Joseph White came on in the 'NEPTUNE' in 1820 embarked with 156 males and landed with 156 males. The 'NEPTUNE' was 36 years old when it made its last voyage as a convict ship in 1850.

In a muster in 1825, Joseph was listed as being free by servitude and employed by PL.Elija Lane, Evans. He became a farmer and married Harriet Marbury.
