Joseph, son of Elijah and Priscilla (Russ) Whiton Sr., married Joanna Chaffee on October 4, 1770 in Ashford, CT. They had 10 known children: Martha, Stephen, Joseph Jr, Elijah, David, Heber, Joanna, Sarah, Abner, and Priscilla.

Joseph combined the trades of carpentry and coopering with farming. The house built by him in 1800 was always occupied by members of the Whiton family, at least until 1932 when it was occupied by Miss Ellen L. Whiton. Joseph was a member of the Ashford, Connecticut Committee on Supplies during the Revolutionary War. When the new church at Westford was organized he was one of the first signers of the church covenant on February 15, 1768. An old record calls him a "very pious and worthy man."
