Joseph Winship was captain and owner of a trading vessel, trading between New London, Connecticut, and the West Indies. The following is copied from the Norwich, CT. town records: "Captain Joseph Winship saided from New London, Conn., October 11, 1765. He was spoken off the coast December 28, and was never heard from afterward. Lost in a storm at sea." His son, Joseph, was with him.
A note from the author, Ernest Byron Cole, of :The Winship Family in America" "I have often heard my grandmother, the granddaughter of Joseph Winship, tell the story, that her grandmother was busy at her housework, when a young bird, followed by the parent bird, flew into the house through an open door and they beat thgemselves to death against the walls, and she declared it was an omen, that her husband and son were lost."
