Joseph was born in Berkeley County, Virginia, 05 Aug 1786; and after a residence in Kentucky, he moved with his family to Illinois and settled in Edwards county, which is now Wabash County. On 11 Jul 1808 he married at Vincennes, Indiana, Leah Greathouse, The daughter of Enoch Greathouse, the original owner of the land where the city of Mt Carmel, Wabash County, Illinois now stands.
