About Susan Ann Buchanan

This house (pictured) will be remembered as the Enoch Buchanan property, located in Halifax community. The house was built in the early 1800's by Eoch's father, Joshua Jr., who cameto this area in 1797. He married Susan Wood and fathered fourteen children. As the children were born, more rooms were built- all with fireplaces for no purpose other than to furnish heat. Joshua reasoned that cutting wood for all these fireplaces would help keep his eleven sons out of mischief. The house passed from generation to generation in the same family. Enoch, born 1/15/1820, died 3/19/1900, married Martha Moody and they had six children. After the death of Enoch and Martha, Ira A. Buchanan, husband of Rebecca Francess Pruitt, purchased the property. Ira died when the boys were still very small and his widow had to work very hard in order to clear it from debt- working fields as hard as any man. Loran Buchanan married Cleo Swarford & they lived in this home until the 1970s when they sold it and the 82 acreson which it still stands, to William Henry Cornwell. (The house has now been torn down- 2004). Enoch is buried in Meredith- Buchanan graveyard, Hwy 1332, near Halifax, Allen Co., KY.
