In August 1945, he married Reichel "Rae" Kushner (February 27, 1923 – 2004)
The Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy and the Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School, both in Livingston, New Jersey, are named in their honour


Joseph Kushner was a Jewish Partisan in Belarus, in the Kalinina unit between 1941-1944 under the name Yosif Moise'evich Berkovich. Yosif took the surname of his father-in-law for his visa to get to the US and travelled with him, because there was priority given to fathers and sons.
