About Josephine Pajihatakana

Josephine was a Sioux (Spirit Lake Tribe, formerly known as Devils Lake Sioux Tribe)) woman

Biography:
Josephine was born c. 1888 to Sioux father Pajihatakana and Sioux mother Maniwakanwin.

Josephine was admitted to the Canton Asylum for Insane Indians on August 31, 1917, by the Devils Lake Agency, and no diagnosis, at age 29. Both parents seem to have died after the 1910 census which probably means that she had become a burden on the community by the Devils Lake Agency, notwithstanding any mental or physical diagnosis, which was a common method of relieving an Agency of responsibility when they had no other means to care for someone.

According to the February 17, 1934 letter by Dr. L. L. Culp, Josephine died September 25, 1921, and was buried in the Hiawatha cemetery tier 6 plot 38.

Research Notes:
-the 1908 Indian census seems to have a typo, indicating her birth as April 13, 1908, instead of, probably, April 13, 1988
