Josephine was 10 minutes older than her twin sister, Rhoda. They were born at The Chicago Lying-in Hospital. Josephine weighed 5 pounds, 3 ounces at birth and was 19 inches long.

She was later referred to as "JoJo" because the family had a live-in housekeeper whose name was Josephine. When Lillian Halpern would call for "Jo," both would come. The housekeeper was then referred to as "Big Jo" and little Josephine was called "JoJo."
