Know all men by these presents--That I Joshua Abell of Norwich, In yeCounty of New London, Co nsidering ye mortality of my body vc. havethought fit now in my Right understanding & memor y to Settle & Dispose ofmy temporal estate by this my Last Will and testament. In mannerfollo wing & first of all my will is yt my wife Injoy During her naturalLife one third part of al l my Lands & thereunto.
Item. yt She Enjoy one third part of my other estate viz. of my Chattelsboth Real & Persona l at her dispose forever.
Item. I will & bequeath to my two Eldest daughters viz. to Anne Fitch &Martha Smith & to thei r husbands Nathaniel Fitch & Obadiah Smith twentypounds yt is ten pounds to each Daughter & h er husband.
Item. I will all ye Residue of my Lands--tenements Goods Chattels &Estate of all sorts in wha t place or places soever be equally divided toand amongst my other four daughters & their hus bands that is to say thefourth part yt of to my son in law Thomas Lathrop to hold during hisn atural life & after yt to remain to his wife my daughter Lydia and herheirs in fee Simple.
One other fourth part thereof to my Son in law John Leffingwell to holdduring his natural Lif e & then after yt to Remain to his wife my daughterSarah & her heirs in fee Simple.
One other fourth part to my Son in law Hugh Calkins to hold During hisnatural Life & then aft er that to Remain to my daughter his wife Phebe &her heirs in fee Simple.
& ye other fourth part to my son in law John Lathrop to hold during hisnatural Life & then af ter that to his wife my daughter Elizabeth & herheirs in fee Simple.
All wayes provided for it is my will yt in ye division amongst my fourDaughters Left with the ir husbands named, it shall be considered whatthey or any of them have Received or before m y decease shall havereceived and they shall first be made Equall and then ye Residue equallyD ivided as aforesd. Excepting yt ye farm I gave to John Leffingwell shallbe counted to him a t Twenty pounds Less than its just worth which Iconsider for ye trouble he has been at in def ending ye title of it. AlsoExcepting all my Lands in Voluntown which I will to my Son in La w ThomasLathrop & his wife Lydia & their heirs as a free gift (for Reasons to meknown) & shal l not be counted to them in ye Distribution as any part oftheir portion.
Finally--I make my Son in law Thomas Lathrop aforesd ye sole executor ofthis my Last will wh o is hereby directed to pay all my debts & funeralcharges with ye twenty pounds to my two eld est daughters & their husbandsaforesd & then to assign & Sett to my wife Bethia her third par t as willin ye Real as in ye Personal Estate as she & he shall agree & then by yeorders & Dir ections of ye perogative Court to proceed to make an Equalityas above in my will ordered & th en an Equal Division of what shall beRemaining as is above Expressed.
