Joshua was born near the western slope of the green mts. in or about lisbon, otsego co., ny. as a young man he concluded to go west out of ny and try the realities of a pioneer life in a new country. he started on foot for mi, walking the entire distance, arriving at coldwater, mi. (600 miles) after locating 80 acres of land in section 18 of ovid twp., he returned home for his family, and they arrived back in mi on april 30, 1837.

his first wife died the following april, leaving him with three small children, the oldest only 9 years old. on april 6 1840 he was married to olive a bates of farmington, oakland co., mi. to this union eight children were born, four dying in infancy. on july 18 1869 joshua became ill with diptheria and died on the 30th of that month, leaving a wife and 6 children to mourn his loss. he is buried in west ovid cemetery, branch co., mi.
