Biography

Joshua Fobes (aka Forbes) was a large landowner and prominent farmer in Bridgewater, Plymouth, Massachusetts. He was born May 20, 1689, the second son of Deacon Edward Fobes (b. 1651) and his wife Elizabeth Howard Fobes. His older brother was John Fobes (b. 1679).

Joshua settled a tract of land south of Bridgewater, near the Three-Mile River, known as Titicut, after the local Indian tribe. He was also a Deacon of the Bridgewater Congregationalist Church for many years, like his father. He married Abigail Dunbar (b. 1691) there on December 4, 1711, in Bridgewater and they had 8 children (all aka "Fobes"):

1. Bethia FORBES b: 2 JUN 1712, Bridgewater, Plymouth, Massachusetts
2. Joshua FORBES b: 22 JUL 1715, Bridgewater MA
3. Hannah FORBES b: 20 NOV 1715, Bridgewater
4. Mary FORBES b: 1 MAY 1717, Bridgewater MA
5. Leah FORBES b: 27 MAR 1720, Bridgewater MA
6. Rachel FORBES b: 30 JUL 1722, Bridgewater MA
7. Bettie FORBES b: 19 JUL 1724, Bridgewater MA
8. Abigail FORBES b: 2 APR 1728 in Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts

Abigail Dunbar Fobes/Forbes died sometime between 1728 and 1754.

On June 5, 1754, Deacon Joshua Fobes remarried, this time to Marcy [aka "Mercy"] Churchill (b. 1696 in Plympton MA - likely a grand-daughter of immigrant John Churchill (1620-62)). So far as is now known, they did not have children together. Their marriage took place in Plympton, Marcy's hometown.[1]

On April 6, 1767, Deacon Fobes was found dead in his bed from natural causes. His estate was valued at: 386:18:09 Pounds Sterling. This was a considerable sum for the time and place.

Deacon Fobes was buried at Plymouth Cemetery with the following inscription:[2]

IN MEMORY OF JOSHUA FOBES, SON OF DEA. EDWARD FOBES. DIED 1767, AGE 78 YEARS. THE FIRST WHITE SETTLER IN TITICUT.
Massachusetts Colony
