About Joshua Hawkes
Joshua grew up on the family farm in Wapping, a part of Deerfield. At the time of the hostilities with the Indians and French, Joshua served as a soldier on the western frontier (1748-1750). He was stationed at Fort Pelham.
He and Abigail were married on 1 March 1744 at Deerfield and had 6 children. In 1750 Joshua and his brothers settled on land in Charlemont. In 1754 the three brothers built the Hawks Fort in the western part of Chalremont, and it became one in a line of forts across the hostile frontier. Joshua did much of the building work. He was described as one of the most conspicuous and self-sacrificing men in Charlemont in a history of the Pocumtuck Valley. The cause of his death at such a young age is not known. An inventory of his estate made on 3 Jan 1762 shows that he had a house, barn and 250 acres of land as well as a large personal estate.
