Joshua Saffell (Samuel),

  • probably born in Md.,
  • Married 24 July 1777 in Montgomery County, Maryland by Rev. Thomas Reed, See Marriage Records by Brumbaugh Vol 2, P156., to Verlinda Prather b 1759 Md.
  • died ca 1812 Iredell Co., N. C. It is not known where or exactly when Joshua died, but it is believed that he went to N. C. with his family after 1791.
  • He is listed in Mtg Co., Md 1790 census.

He was in the Revolutionary War, a Fifer in Capt. Lucas' 3rd Company. Hall of records, Annapolis Archives of Maryland Vol. 18 Folio 9. Also at Annapolis Revolutionary Papers, Box 11, Folder 19 item 4, Joshua Saffell is on list of men in Capt. Lucas' Co., who'd had breeches.

Orphans Court Proceedings of Mtg. Co., Md. p37 Susannah Garrett, orphan over age 14 & under 16, chooses Joshua Saffell as her guardian, who gives bond. dated 11 April 1786. Also, papers on Joshua and the estate of Susanna Garrett of Mtg Co. Liber D #4 witnessed by Forest Davis and Dorcas Davis. nd, but ca 1787-1789.

Land Records of Mtg Co., Md Liber C #3, p608, Mortgage John Boyd to Joshua Saffell of Mtg Co. 200 acres dated 23 Aug 1787, as well as other transactions.

In the 1800 census of Iredell Co., N. C. James Saffell, son of Joshua was listed as the head of the house, with all members of the family accounted for. Apparently dating Joshua's death as before 1800. In 1810 Lindy Saffell, same county, (Virlinda) was head of the house. Son James was then married in Tennessee.

Verlinda Prather Saffel leaves a will in Iredell Co., N. C. dated 22 July 1812, naming 7 children. Witnesses were: Barton Dyson and Rachel Prather.

1 Ruth Saffell b ca 1778, prob Md. M Mr Caten (?) 2 + James Saffell b ca 1780 Md. 3 Elizabeth Saffell b ca 1782 Md. ?? M Mr Stroud 4 + Walter Saffell b 1784-1790 Md. 5 + Amos Saffell b 1784-1790 Md. 6 Anna Saffell b ca 1790 Md. ?? M Mr Stroud 7 Barbary Saffell b 1784-1794 Md. ??

Barbara Saffel was named the Executrix of her mother's will. It is a bit difficult to estimate her age, and she apparently was not married at the time. One of the daughters was married to a Richard Stroud, for he was mentioned too. Unfortunately we know nothing further on Joshua and Verlinda's daughters.

(12–31 August 1776)

  • Parent unit: Stirling's Brigade
  • 3d Company – Captain Barton Lucas

On 6 July 1776 the Maryland Battalion was assigned to the main Continental Army. On 12 August 1776 it was assigned to Stirling's Brigade and five days later (17 August 1776) adopted into the main Continental Army.

On 31 August the Maryland Battalion was re-assigned from Stirling's Brigade to McDougall's Brigade. On 19 September 1776 the Maryland Independent Companies were assigned to the Maryland Battalion. This element was relieved from McDougall's Brigade on 10 November 1776. From 10 December 1776 to January 1777 the element was assigned to Mercer's Brigade. In January 1777 this element was re-organized to eight companies and was re-designated as the 1st Maryland Regiment and assigned to the 1st Maryland Brigade on 22 May 1777 of the main continental Army. On 12 May 1779 the regiment was re-organized to nine companies. On 5 April 1780 the 1st Maryland Brigade was re-assigned to the Southern Department. On 1 January 1781 it was re-assigned to the Maryland Brigade of the Southern Department. The regiment would see action during the New York Campaign, Battle of Trenton, Battle of Princeton, Battle of Brandywine, Battle of Germantown, Battle of Monmouth, Battle of Camden and the Battle of Guilford Court House. The regiment was furloughed 27 July 1783 at Baltimore and disbanded on 15 November 1783.

The Maryland Battalion distinguished itself at the Battle of Long Island by single-handedly covering the retreat of the American forces against numerically superior British and Hessian forces. Thereafter, General George Washington relied heavily upon the Marylanders as one of the few reliable fighting units in the early Continental Army. For this reason, Maryland is sometimes known as "The Old Line State." [1] The lineage of this unit is perpetuated by the 175th Infantry Regiment, Maryland Army National Guard.
