About Joshua Williams

DAR Ancestor # A126492

Joshua served a year under Capt. Allen in Col. Ward's Regiment of the Massachusetts Militia during the War for Independence, enlisting from Middlebury, MA; he received a pension on account of this service, and the pension application 20 April 1818 indicates that he then resided at Tilden's Plantation (now Great Pond), Union River, Penobscot Co., Maine. {See Gleason Leonard Archer, "Ancestors and descendants of Joshua Williams, a Mayflower descendant and pioneer" (Boston: Wright & Potter Print. Co., 1927, 59 pgs); Pension Dept. S. F. 38470; Bridgewater, MA VR 408:V.II; Abington VR 2, 49, 243 - Births p. 47.} His military service is also recorded in "Soldiers, Sailors and Patriots of the Revolutionary War - Maine," Carleton E. Fisher (Louisville, KY: NSSAR, 1982), p. 864 and NEHGR 1903, p. 76. [Wikipedia offers: "The 21st Continental Regiment was raised April 23, 1775 as a Massachusetts militia Regiment at Cambridge, Massachusetts under Colonel Jonathan Ward. The regiment would join the Continental Army in June 1775. The regiment saw action during the Siege of Boston, the New York Campaign and the Battle of Trenton. The regiment was disbanded on January 1, 1777 at Morristown, New Jersey."] "Mark Honey (The Ellsworth American, 10 April 2008, p. I:4) states that Joshua was wounded during his service in the war. Joshua and his family were among the first settlers at Great Pond (before 1808/09). He and Bethiah had three known children, of whom Simeon is the last. For their settlement at Tilden, see Baker, George W. & Marjorie L., "Munsungun to the Sea" (N.Y.: Vantage Press, 1972), pp. 17ff. [Posting person has proven his lineage from Joshua as member 73197 of the Sons of the Anerican Revolution.] Cf. http://emainehosting.com/Williams and "Ancestors and Descendants of Joshua Williams and John Collar," Christine R. Brown (Knoxville, TN: Campbell, 1984). For marriage, see Family History Library, Salt Lake City, UT, Film # 0770907 & 0904377.
