About Josiah H. Bowman

In 1860, he was a clerk living in West Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and stood 5' 4" tall with light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lancaster October 1, 1861, and mustered into federal service there October 2 as a private with Co. I, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry, rising to the rank of 1st sergeant. Sometime after September 1, 1862, he was detached to duty at the headquarters of Maj. Gen. William Rosecrans in Nashville, Tennessee, where he discharged the service January 30, 1863, for "chronic pyelitis" and "chronic diarrhea of two months standing." The regiment did not learn of his discharge until nearly a year later. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster September 1, 1864, as a private with Co. A, 203rd Pennsylvania Infantry, appointed regimental clerk October 17, 1864, and honorably discharged with his company June 22, 1865.
