Genealogy of Hobbs Family of Mass. by George Hobbs, Esq. 1855 - Moved to Lexington, Ma with his father in 1690, where he resided until about 1705. Being then 21 years of age, he returned to Boston, and there remained for the next 25 years.
In 1708, he married Esther Davenport, of Dorchester, and resided at the north end of Boston, where he engaged in agricultural pursuites. When far advanced in years he used to relate many interesting events of his early days. He stated that himself, and his boys, drove the cows to pasture from the north end of Boston to Muddy Brook, now Brookline, and also to Roxbury, and that he hoed corn on Cornhill.
He and his wife joined the North Church where all his children, but one, were christened.
In 1730, he took up his residence in the town of Weston, with his family, consisting of three sons and four daughters; their youngest son, Nathan, being born the year after their removal. Mr. Hobbs purchased his farm in weston, of a mr. Cheeny. This spot has been looked upon as the home of the family, from that day to this, - no records of which having been kept, the traditions have passed down through the said Josiah.
He held with strictness to the faith and worship of our Puritan fathers, and was careful to observe the rules and to practice all the austerities that belonged to the sect at that day.
Soon after their settlement at Weston, Mr Hobbs and his wife connected themselves with the church in that place, of which the Rev. Wm. Williams and the Rev. Samuel Woodward was pastors.
Mr. Hobbs died 27 Feb 1779, aged 94 years. His widow deceased 29 Nov 1778, aged 88.
Lexington History says Josiah moved from Lexington to Boston about 1714, but he was a member of the church in Dorchester soon afterwards, and then changed to Old North Church in Boston in 1724 (from the Dorchester church records) and then to Weston in 1731/32. His son Ebenezer stayed put in Weston, but Ebenezer's son, Elisha, moved "way out west" to Princeton, Ma about 1765 and died there in 1816.
Note: From the "Genealogy of the Hobbs Family of Massachusetts", by George Hobbs, Esq., pub. 1855, the following facts have been ascertained: Josiah moved to Lexington, MA with his father, in 1690, where he lived until 1705. Being 21 years old, he moved to Boston and lived there for 25 years. In 1708 he married Esther Davenport of Dorchester. They lived in the North End of Boston, where he engaged in agricultural pursuits. When far advanced in years he used to relate many interesting events of his early days. He said he and his boys drove the cows to pasture from the north end to Muddy Brook (now Brookline) and also to Roxbury. He said he had hoed corn on Cornhill. He and Esther joined the New North Church (Cotton Mather's) where all his children, but one, were christened. In 1730 in purchased the Cheney Farm in Weston and moved his family (3 sons & 4 daughters) there. Their youngest son, Nathan, was born a year later. "This spot has been looked upon as the home of the family, from that day to this, - no records of which having been kept, the traditions have passed down to us through the said Josiah." He strictly held to the faith and worship of the Puritan fathers and was careful to observe the rules and to practice all the austerities that belonged to the sect at that time. In Weston, Josiah and Esther were in the church where Rev. William Williams and Rev. Samuel Woodward were pastors.
From the Registry of Deeds: Court records/deeds for Weston, Page 57:456, it is noted that Josiah made an agreement with his son Nathan to provide support for himself and his wife, dated June 9, 1760.
