Josiah Seely served in the Orange County Militia during the Revolutionary War. References to his military service include the following:
"New York in the Revolution," by James A Roberts, published in 1898, Page 253. He is shown as an enlisted man in the First Regiment of the Militia, commanded by Major Zarhariah Du Bois.
"Documents relating to the Colonial History of the State of New York," by Berthold Fernow, published in 1887, Pages 289 and 290. He is shown as a 1st Lieutenant in the Oxford Company of the Cornwall Regiment, commanded by Colonel Jesse Woodhull. The Oxford Company commander was Captain Thomas Horton. The notation is listed under, "Changes in the Regiment," dated March 31, 1777.
"History Of Orange County, New York," by R.M. Ruttenber and L.H. Clark, published in 1881, Page 48. He is shown as a 1st Lieutenant in the Oxford Company commanded by Captain Thomas Horton with the date of 1777. The company was part of Colonel Jesse Woodhull's Cornwall Regiment. The Cornwall Regiment and four others made up the Fourth Brigade commanded by General George Clinton.
He is listed in the SGS Vol. I as # 181on Page 25.
