JONAS SEELEY Obadiah and Mary's son Jonas was born about 1653. He married and had two children. In 1689 he was remarried to the widow, Mary Wicks Waterbury. She was the widow of John Waterbury and the daughter of Thomas Wicks. Jonas and Mary had six children. He lived in Stamford, Fairfield, Connecticut in 1699, where he was one of the seventy-five settlers who drew a lot there. He also lived in Bedford, New York. He died in Stamford in 1703. She died there on New Years Eve 1738.

Jonas and his first wife's children:

1.Sarah was born in February 1685, she married July 29, 1707, Jonathan Holmes, they lived in Bedford, New York, she died February 27, 1727. 2.Samuel married May 13, 1709, Charlotte Popino, had issue- Samuel md. Mary De Haven, Susanna, Sarah, Christopher md. Mary Ball, Jonas md. Hannah Peperill Hartley, Charles, John, Joseph.

Jonas and Mary's children:

3.Martha was born September 20, 1690, she died a young woman on May 25, 1710. 4.Jonas was born July 22, 1692, he died a young man in 1710, probably from the same epidemic that killed two of his siblings that year. 5.Susanna was born June 12, 1694, she also died July 1, 1710. 6.Ebenezer, see below. 7.Nathaniel was born August 23, 1699, he never married, he lived at North Castle, New York. 8.Eliphalet was born August 20, 1701, he married December 4, 1724, Sarah Holly, he died May 3, 1784, had issue- Martha md. Sarah Bates, Sarah md. Elisha Leeds, Eliphalet md. Mary Scribner & Sarah Gorham Hanford, Mary md. Caleb St. John, Wicks md. Mary St. John & Bethia Mills, Sylvanus md. Rebecca Tuttle, Elisha, Elizabeth md. Samuel Hanford. 9.Elizabeth, Eliphalet's twin married December 6, 1728, Nathaniel Sanford.


Ebenezer Seeley 1696-1767 by Donna Scott

The first Seeley in America was Robert Seeley. He came to New England with his two sons, Nathaniel and Obadiah. Obadiah was born in England in 1614. He married Mary Angell in Connecticut in 1644. The Seeleys lived in the Connecticut, New York and New Jersey area for six generations.

Ebenezer Seeley, the grandson of Obadiah Seeley and son of Jonas Seeley and Mary Wicks was born in Connecticut in 1696 and died in New York in 1767. Ebenezer was a Second Lieutenant in the French and Indian War in 1758. He is also listed in the “Graves of Revolutionary Patriots”.

Will of Ebenezer Seeley (dated May 16, 1763) In the name of god, Amen. I Ebenezer Seeley, of the Precinct of Goshen, in Orange County, being sick. I direct all debts paid. I leave my wife, Eunice, my small farm, situated at Oxford, which I have lately purchased of Isaac Allison, with the house, so long as she remains my widow. I also leave her £100, and such goods as she brought to me; Also a negro girl and a horse. After her death or marriage, I leave the house to my son, John. All the rest of my real estate in Goshen or New Windsor, in Ulster County, shall be sold by my executors and after paying debts, I leave to my sons, John and Josiah, each £100. My “lot of white meadow” is to be sold, and the money paid to my daughter Mercy Bartlett. I leave to my eldest grandson Bezeal Seeley, 20s. All the rest of my estate to my children, Bezeal, Israel, Josiah, John, Mercy Bartlett, and Susanna Sayre. I leave to my son Nathaniel 20s. Small legacies to my grandchildren, Mercy, Hannah, and Eleazor. Whereas I have a bond against my son Bezeal for £500, my executors are to pay the same to my eight other children, William, Jonas, Theoderus, Elijah, Hannah, Susannah, Sarah, and Mercy. I make my son Israel, and my son-in-law, James Sayer, Executors. Dated May 16, 1763. Witnesses, Eliza Ward, Eliot Ward, Daniel Everit. Proved March 7, 1767 by John Gale, Surrogate.

Ebenezer Seeley married Mercy Dean in 1718. Their son, Nathaniel Seeley, was born in Connecticut in 1732. Their daughter, Mercy Seeley, was born in 1723. Nathaniel Seeley married Jemima Collins. They had a son named Samuel Seeley. Mercy Seeley married Samuel Bartlett. They had a daughter named Mercy Bartlett.
