Capt. Josiah Tilton, son of Josiah and Sarah (Flanders) Tilton, was born 22 October 1743 at Kingston, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.
Josiah was baptized 17 November 1745 at East Kingston, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.

Josiah married first Sarah True, daughter of Abraham and Sarah "Sally" (French) True, about 1768 at East Kingston, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. To this union six children were born:

1. Samuel Tilton; born 02 December 1771 at Deerfield, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. Samuel married Deborah Batchelder, daughter of Nathaniel and Mary (Longfellow) Batchelder, 30 September 1795 at Deerfield, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. Samuel died after 1850. He is seen in the 1850 Census of Newbury, Essex County, New Hampshire. They had the following children: i. Polly; died young ii. Josiah B.; born 28 May 1799 at Deerfield, Rockingham County, New Hampshire; died 01 January 1892 at Deerfield, Rockingham County, New Hampshire; married Nancy Adams. iii. Samuel S. Tilton; born about 1801 at Nova Scotia; died 06 June 1853 at Newburyport, Essex County, Massachusetts. Cause of Death: Typhoid Fever. iv. True; died young v. Nathaniel; died young vi. Joseph True; born about 1814 at Deerfield, Rockingham County, New Hampshire; died 12 March 1859 at Deerfield, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. vii. Sarah A.; born about 1818 at Deerfield, Rockingham County, New Hampshire; married Andrew E. Leighton. They had son, Washington T. Leighton; born about 1850 at Deerfield, Rockingham County, New Hampshire; died 17 August 1930 at Concord, Merrimack County, New Hampshire; married Elma F. Kelsey, 22 December 1884 at Dover, Strafford County, New Hampshire.
