Father: John Coggeshall, b. Oct. 5, 1757, Newport, Rhode Island; d. 19 Jul 1830, New Bedford, Bristol Co, Massachusetts

Mother: Abigail Hayden, b. cir 1757; d. 2 Jul 1834, aged 77 years.

On the reverse of the wooden panel on which his portrait is painted is an old paper label, on which is written in ink: This is the portrait of Josias Coggeshall, who was born in New Bedford, Aug. 15, 1786, and who graduated at Brown University in the year 1808. After leaving College he studied law, and practiced his profession in the city of New York, with good success. In 1816 he abandoned law and commenced study for the ministry, but his health failing him, he returned to New Bedford where he died Oct. 24th 1817. His portrait was painted in 1810 in New York, artist unknown, and is presented to Brown University by his nephew James Coggeshall, class of 1840.
