About Josias Marle
Ben notes: Some online sources are suggesting Josias Marle's birth year as 1593, but I haven't found one that cited a source. Therefore, I'm going with 1598, as that is at least cited in the Mellott-Eastman family tree.

Although it requires more substantive verification, Josias Merlet (also written Marles and Marlet) and his wife, Jeanne Robb (also written Rabbe and Robbe), are believed to be the parents of our immigrant ancestor, Gideon Merlet, and his brother, Paulus.
Josias is believed to have been born in about 1600 in France, where he was later married to a woman named Jeanne Robb. Josias and Jeanne were apparently residents of Roussy in Champagne Province, France.
Although Gideon and Paulus are the only two children that have been identified as "probable" issue of Josias and Jeanne (Robb) Merlet, it is very likely that they may have had other children.
1. Gideon
- b. ca. 1625 at Roussy, Champagne Province, Fr.
- m. 21 August 1644 to Marguerite Martijn at the Leiden Walloon Church, Zuid Holland, Neth.
- d. February 1682/83 at Piscataway in the Province of East Jersey. (Now within Middlesex Co., NJ.)
2. Paulus
- b. probably at Roussy, Champagne Province, Fr.
- m. 20 February 1655 to Elizabeth Moreau at the F.R.C., Mannheim, Palatinate, Ger. (now Baden-Wuerttemberg, Ger.)

Ben M. Angel notes: If he in fact lived his entire life in Roucy, the noble who would have presided over the town for most of his life would have been:
1605-1680 : François IV de la Rochefoucauld, fils du précédent
marié à Julienne Catherine de La Tour d'Auvergne (née à Sedan en 1604, épouse le Comte de Roucy en 1630 - an older sister of the famous French Marshal Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne), fille de Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne, duc de Bouillon (1555, Joze - 1623, Sedan).
---
Henri was a Protestant who died while rebelling in the west of France - his daughter would have been a strong Protestant and likely protector of those Protestants who stayed behind in Roucy.
("Precedent" would have been Charles II de la Rochefoucauld and Claude de Gontaut-Biron)
