About Joy Mukherjee
He is an Indian film actor.
Joy Mukherjee is the son of Sashadhar Mukherjee and Sati Devi. His father was a successful producer and a co-founder of Filmistan Studios. His paternal uncle is director Subodh Mukherjee, whilst his maternal uncles were Ashok Kumar and Kishore Kumar. His brothers are Deb Mukherjee and Shomu Mukherjee who was married to actress Tanuja. Their daughters are actresses Kajol and Tanisha. His niece is Rani Mukerji and nephew is her cousin, director Ayan Mukerji.
Joy was paired up with Sadhana in the film Love in Simla (1960) directed by R.K. Nayyar. Here is a story as narrated by my father, Aghajani Kashmeri (AKA Agha Jani and Kashmiri) who wrote the script and dialogues for Love in Simla and picked Joy for this role. Sashodhar (also Sashadhar), his father, was a close friend and employer of Agha Jani. One evening, as the two were having scotch whisky and discussing Love in Simla, and who would play the lead role (Sashodhar was keen on Shammi Kapoor), Agha Jani watched Joy come home from his Bombay University classes. He pointed to the tall and good looking man and said, "there is your hero." Sashodhar didn't believe Joy would make it and asked Agha Jani whether he would undertake the responsibiltiy to teach Joy how to act and teach him the language and its delivery. Agha Jani agreed. And a new hero was introduced to Bollywood. After Love in Simla, he paired up with Asha Parekh for several hits like Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon and Ziddi. In the late 60’s roles for Joy started drying up as stars such as Dharmendra, Jeetendra and Rajesh Khanna grew in popularity.
Joy then produced and directed Humsaaya but the movie did not do well and his subsequent films as producer or director did not do too well. Despite a late success with home production Ek Baar Muskura Do (1972) with brother Deb Mukherjee and later to be sister-in-law Tanuja, Joy faded from the film scene. His last success came with him directing Chailla Babu, a film starring Zeenat Aman and Rajesh Khanna.
In 2009 he acted in the television serial "Aye Dil-e-Nadan".
