About Jozef Broniatowski

Jozef Broniatowski, was a lawyer in Czestochowa, with an office at N. P. Marii 40. When the Nazis invaded, he served briefly as a member of the Czestochowa Judenrat, although he was removed after three weeks for sabotaging Nazi plans. He ultimately perished in Treblinka.

BRONIATOWSKI Józef Josef (1904-1942), lawyer, member of the Council of Elders [Judenrat]. He was born on 21st February 1904 in Częstochowa, the son of Lewek and Cyrla née Rapaport.

In 1922, Broniatowski graduated from the R. Traugutt II State Gimnazjum in Częstochowa. In the 1925/26 academic year, he began studying in the Law Faculty of the Jagiellonian University. Following graduation, he completed his legal internship. In October 1933, he applied and was accepted as a trainee advocate. In March 1937, he was entered onto the list of advocates of the District Bar Association in Warsaw. In 1925, he lived at II Aleja 6. He conducted a legal practice in Częstochowa at II Aleja 40.

During the German occupation, on 1st October 1939, he was selected to join the 24-person Council of Elders (Judenrat). He was opposed to the Council Executive’s policy and, after a few months, he ceased to participate in its work, for which, at the beginning of 1940, he was removed from the Judenrat. He was transported from the Częstochowa ghetto and, probably in the autumn of 1942, he perished in the Treblinka extermination camp.
