About Jozefa Jacobi
Nicknamed "Muhi" or Jozineni by the family.
Muhi was a character! She feared vanilla and chocolate ice cream for being poisonous. She paid me (Andy Hegedus) extra money not to buy those flavors.
She was absurdly impractical. My Mom (Kaca Hegedus) told me that she complained that my grandfather, Bela, did no work. (His office was an apartment that abutted theirs.) To prove that he worked, he bought a hammer and pounded on his desk. Then inquired from his wife if that proved that he worked. My Mom also told me that Muhi had no idea what occurred in the kitchen. Most mornings, eg. 10:30 am, she headed off to the coffee houses where she would socialize for most of the day. Before she went off, she would meet with the cook so that the cook could remove from the spejz (food closet) that was locked the supplies that the cook would need for that evenings meal. She would lock the spejz and be off for the day. Well, the cook was besides herself because she would forget some ingredient or the number of people invited for dinner would substantially increase. Muhi and Bela were sociable. The cook went to Bela and tendered her resignation because she could not do the work! Grandpa Bela had a solution. He stole Muhi's key, had a copy made, and returned the key without Muhi knowing any better. He gave the new key to the cook and instructed her to do as before so that Muhi would not be suspicious. So, the cook kept up the morning ritual, but reduced the amount of supplies taken out to a very items, eg. cup of flour, two eggs, etc. Well Muhi noticed this and went around the coffee houses telling all how ingenious her cook was. "With a couple of eggs, cup of milk, and little sugar, she cooked a full course meal for eight!"
After the Communist took over in 1948, there were periodic elections in which all citizens were required to participate even if there were no choices. Muhi refused to participate. She was not going to participate in a charade! Well, the local warden was besides herself! Everybody had to participate. Muhi's daughter's were beside themselves; all their jobs, rental homes, state benefits were at jeopardy. They begged Muhi to be realistic; her benefits (she never cooked and need cooked meals that were state provided) were going to be cut-off. Muhi was prominent in the neighborhood as the widow of a prominent attorney. They insisted that she participate. A compromise was worked out! They brought the polling booth to her apartment; she sat outside of the polling booth, put her hands through the curtain, and someone guided her hand to mark the ballot. Crisis was averted. Everyone was grateful for her participation. She insisted on having her apartment aired out from "all the foul smell."
Muhi was also very informal. She kept drinking out of all her daughters glasses at formal and informal events. Drove her oldest daughter, Magda bonkers.
Muhi was also very loving. She loved her grand children over the top. Even when she had almost nothing, she insisted on giving them treats and buying them presents at every birthday and holidays.
