About Juan Campos Garrigosa Brugeras

Juan Campos Garrigoza was a Captain in the Spanish military:

Capitán Juan Campos Garrigoza

Instituto de Voluntarios de Puerto Rico

Batallón Num. 7

Compañia de Las Marias

Campos Garrigosa Juan Capitán Activo 1.4.70 9.3.94 7º Las Marias

Information provided by Anne Askew:

Captain Juan Campos-Garrigoza y Brugueras was born in 1845 in Mataró,, a textile village, close to Barcelona at that time, now part of the Metropolis. He began his study of Medicine in Madrid before he joined the Spanish

Army. We imagine this was precipitated by a personal "incident" because his younger son remembered that when he was a child, two lawyers traveled from Madrid to Puerto Rico to bring to their home a young orphaned girl whose presence or identity was never explained.

In regard to his relative in P Rico, we understand he

was an uncle, a Catholic cleric. Captain Campos married Doña Mercedes Delgado-Bairon y Thillet who owned a plantation in Maricao, PuertoRico, that he administered. The couple had seven children, two males and five females. Captain Campos remained loyal to Spain and spent some time in Cuba, which was granted independence after the Spanish-American War. On his return to PR, he settled in the San German area where he died 9 February, 1930. Doña Mercedes died in 1939 in Arecibo, PR at the home

of her daughter Elisa
