About Judge Benjamin Franklin “B F” Hill

Judge B. F. Hill, after an illness of a weeks duration of toxic poisoning, died at the St. Joseph Hospital, Louisville, Thursday afternoon. The remains were returned to New Castle and funeral services, conducted by Dr. E. W. Delcamp, pastor of the New Castle Christian Church, were held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Douthitt, Saturday morning, after which interment took place at the New Castle Cemetery.

Judge Hill had attained the age of 84 years. He was born and reared in Trimble County. He was graduate of Kentucky Wesleyan College and adopted teaching as a profession. When about thirty years of age, he came to and located in this county, and spent most of his long life teaching at different points in the county, mostly at the Male and Female College at New Castle. Later he was elected Judge of the Henry County Court and served three terms as County Judge.

While teaching here, in 1884, he married Miss Edmonia Samuell, the daughter of Judge R. P. Samuell. To this marriage were born two sons, R. Harry Hill, who adopted the legal profession and located in the city of Louisville, where he has been quite successful; and is now a member of the law firm of Norman, Quirk, Graham and Hill, having at one time been appointed and served for quite awhile as Judge of one of the Circuit Courts of Jefferson County. The other son, Sanford D. Hill, went to New Zealand and served in the consular service there. At the outbreak of the World War (II) he resigned his commission in the consular service and enlisted with the New Zealand troops, went with them to France, where he was killed while in service.

Judge Hill is survived by his widow, Mrs. Edmonia Hill, who resides at the Castle Hotel, and who has the general and profound sympathy and good will of the whole community. Judge Hill was most efficient, successful and popular as a teacher and was generally considered , regarded and esteemed as one of the ablest, most efficient and useful educators, that ever served the people of the county.

As County Judge he was par excellent, served with conspicuous ability, fidelity and integrity and was highly appreciated, esteemed and honored by the people of the county.
