About Judiah Judia Gardner

  • Information gathered through email research suggests Judiah left his farm in Steuben County NY to his brother Ben and headed west through Indiana and perhaps Wisconsin, before settling in Iowa. Some researchers seem to believe that his brother Ben eventually ends up living with him in Iowa and dying there in 1880. However, I found Ben on the 1880 Census living with his daughter Jane in Gilford, Tuscola, MI. So either Ben did live there and then moved and they assumed he died - or he never lived there and they are confused, because he did end up dying in Gilford. (Don't think Ben lived there ever, unless he moved there after his brother's death, since Judiah died in the early 1850's)

m. GREAT-GREAT-GREAT-STEP-GRANDFATHER Judiah Gardner b. Dec 2 1791 in Vermont

No pictures of Benjemin Ai Cowan's mother exist. Her name was Sally (Sarah) Jordan. What happened to this FIRST Cowan or where he came from I don't know. But Sally is identified as a widow in letters so he must have died soon after Ben Ai was born. Sally remarried when Ben was about a year old to a widowed man named Judiah Gardner. Making her Sarah Jordon Cowan Gardner. They wed in Stueben County New York about 1829. Judiah owned land in Troupsburg twp.(township?) in 1816. There is a census in 1820 and 1830 that recognizes them. The following pictures about the Gardners are therefore cousins. Joseph being an Uncle to Israel "Bob" and a 1st cousin to Charlotte. But was raised as their son because Judiah died around 1853 (buried in Wadena, IO). Sally married a third time to a Cyrus Pierce. He was a veteran of the War of 1812 from Vermont.
