GURI was one of thirteen children of HANS PEDERSEN & KARI STEPHENSDATTER. She was born in Sveen Parish, Sveio, Finnas, at RODMYR farm in Norway. As was the custom in Norway, all names were followed by the farm where they lived and worked. Children of Norwegian couples were given names derived from both parents. A son would take his father's first name and combine it with some of the first part of his mother last name so Guri's brothers went by the last name of HANSEN. The daughters would take their father's first name and combine it with the last part of their mother's name therefore Guri was known in Norway as Guri HANSDATTER. She married Torres Pederson on November 6, 1851 in Skare Parish, Norway.
Guri came to America with her husband, her 5 month old daughter Johanne Torresdatter, (farm Gravdahl) three brothers, DONALD, TORKEL & HANS, departing on Schooner Rogaland from Stavanger, Norway on April 21, 1852. They arrived in New York on June 10, 1852. Johanne died either on the way to America or shortly thereafter. Guri's father had died in 1846. Her mother and five children; SARAH, HELGA, BRITTA, KARI and STEPHEN came to America in 1856. All located in the Norwegian Settlement along the Fox River in Illinois. Guri and TORES (TORRES) PETERSON were there also. They had 4 sons, PETER JOHN, HANS TORUS, ANDREW AND CHARLES. They lived in LaSalle County Illinois when GURI became widowed in the year 1875.
Guri came to Iowa that year with her 4 sons and located in Lincoln Township in Adams County near her sister HELGA who was married to JOHN LARSON. She lived on a small farm and the boys worked wherever they found employment. GURI (JULIA was her legal name on documents) married JOHN SAMPSON between 1885 and 1890 and moved to his farm 1-1/2 miles East of the Strand Church and cemetery where she is now interred. John died sometime before 1900 and GURI sold the farm and made her home with her son CHARLES until her death. Her death certificate reads JULIA SAMPSON but her cemetery marker reads GURI RYGMYR.
