About Juliana Pelegrina Maloney
Julie Maloney was born Juliana Pelegrina Fernandes on Feb. 17, 1915 in Karachi, Pakistan to Sebastian and Chrissalyn Fernandes. She was 5th in a family of 8 children – Agnes (India) (married Joe Ferro), Peter (Pakistan) (married Betsy Fonceca), Albert (India) (married Helen Fernandes), Mary (Pakistan) (married Marcelline D’Costa), Bernard (Qatar) (married Hedi Andrades), Antoinette (India) and Folly (Rawalpindi) (married Libby D’Costa). Julie is the last surviving member of the Fernandes siblings. She attended St. Joseph Convent in Karachi, training to be a teacher. She met Bryan Maloney, a dashing Anglo-Indian marrying him in 1937. Soon after their rst son Donald was born followed by Ivor, with Julie staying home to look after the boys. Sadly, as an infant Donald passed away in 1939 and Ivor in 1955. Julie and Bryan had four more children Conrad, Jean, Michael and Jessica. Recently, Julie lost her last two sons – Connie in - Oct 2007 and Michael in March 2008. Julie has 10 grand-children – Candy, Carl, Rosalind, Troy, Bryan, Geoffrey, Bradley, Francesca, Darlene and Cheryl and 8 greatgrandchildren – Ethan, Jarryd, Callister, Craydon, Joshua, Jordan, Isaac and Grace. Julie worked at the Khalikdina Primary School and when she Julie lost her beloved husband of 38 years in 1975, she joined Little Flower Nursery. In 1989 Julie immigrated to Canada and took to life as a “Senior living in Toronto” with gusto! She learned to take the TTC and went to all the Bingos and community events and all the functions organized by the CanOrient Seniors Clubs, taking trips to the U.S. and some as far away as the Caribbean. Julie is a great cook, a very capable seamstress and enjoys knitting caps and booties for her youngest great grandchildren. She passes her time by going to Church, watching her favourite TV shows like Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune and visiting her friends and spending time with her family. She has a strong independent spirit, a great sense of humour.a kind heart and is always ready to lend a helping hand to the less fortunate. She was instrumental in convincing the Parish to send Deacons to give Communion to the shut-ins in her building.
