About Julius Ellsworth (Red) Cox Sr.

Appliance Store owner ( kitchen appliances ) in Jasper(?), Texas.

Later: Chef for golf courses and country clubs, in Illinois and Wisconsin. About his death, I was told: "Died in an oil refinery explosion in Texas (?) My Mother said, he came to visit them... when she was about 2. Must have been just after."

  • *but the numbers never fit, My Bio- Mother's Birth year, the supposed year he visited and the year of the explosion.. .. we now know, he went on, apparently, to a third life, in Wisconsin.

He was married there July 21, 1812 to Lucy Perkins who was born March 31, 1792 in Virginia. They joined his parents in deeding 20 acres of the Cox farm as a townsite for Williamsburg, Kentucky December 20, 1819.

He appeared as the head of a household in the 1830 census of Whitley County, and the family living in Williamsburg was composed of:

"Cox, Nathan white male 30-40
     white female 20-30
     white male 15-20
     white male 10-15
     white female 5-10
     white female 5-10
     white male 0-5"

They reappeared in the 1840 census of Whitley County. They removed to Livingston County, Missouri about 1842. Nathan Cox appeared as the head of Household 447-447 enumerated in the 1850 census of Livingston County as:

"Cox, Nathan 57, born in Virginia
Lucy 58, born in Virginia

On April 15, 1856 Levi Preston Cox, accompanied by Joel Stamper [possibly his brother-in-law] and others, departed on a trip to Texas. On May 24, 1856 he wrote the following letter to his wife from Austin, Texas. The letter containing genealogical references was furnished by Mary Alnora "Nora" Cox Drennan:

    "Austin, Texas
    Travis County
    May 24, A.D.1856

This is the second time that I have had the pleasure of communicating with you since I left your sedate company. There has not been one hour of the day passed over my head since I left you without my mind calling to memory the days that we have passed together in pleasure. But the past does not suffice for the future. I still live in hopes that you and your little sweet children may all be preserved and remain in good health until I come home again to enjoy your sweet smiles.

I have enjoyed good health ever since I started. And all the balance of my company except Joel, who has had two brushes with the chills, but is well at this time or was well two days ago when I left them on the way from Solomon Cox's [Solomon Benjamin Cox] to this place. I look for them in today. I am at this time in Andrew Cox's [Andrew McClure Cox]. They are all well except one little boy with chills. We landed in Belton, the county seat of Bell County on the 19th of May. There we learned that up Nolen Creek twelve miles lived a neighborhood of Coxes. We took up the creek and found them. Cousin Joseph Cox lived in the neighborhood, and Solomon, John, and Andrew [Andrew Baker Cox] (those are Abel Cox's family) and Flemen Cox [Fleming Trigg Cox] lives there also. They live in the best watered country I ever saw in my life. There are rich valleys and plenty of timber there. About as good as you can find in western Texas. It is bound to be a healthy country. Every man has a good spring on his place and some have several. They are well at this time. This also looks like a healthy place around Austin. Timber is plentiful and some as fine a country as I ever saw. The timber in western Texas is all low and scrubby with the exception of some cedar brakes (they tell me that they are tall and fine in places.) One man told me that they could make 5,000 rails off one acre of land in some of these cedar brakes.

I will call your attention back to the second county that I struck in Texas, Collen [Collin] County. There is the best wheat land that I ever saw in any country. The timber is too scarce in that portion of Texas. Land is high there. In places from $10.00 to $15.00 per acre.

There is some good country in Dallas County on the Trinity River. Land rates around Dallas are high. However, it is sickly in Dallas. We crossed the Brazos River the 17th of May. I saw corn there that would average as high as my head. The people say that crops are later than usual, in fact about one month later than common. Corn in this country look goods although some fields have been taken by grasshoppers.

I expect to start from here to San Antonio in a few days, if I keep fat and cool. The weather is warm here. Today is the warmest I have felt since I left home. The nights are cool and pleasant. Oh, how I would sleep with you the year round in this pleasant country. Abel's brother Andrew Cox [Andrew Baker Cox] is going to move back to Missouri. He expects to come with us. Flemen [Fleming Trigg Cox] is coming with me. Flem is coming on business.

It is too warm to write more today. A lady told us that here in Texas she had planted three crops of peas and raised them in the same that Texas is a good country for a good many vegetables but it is not good for Irish potatoes and cabbage. Part of this country is great for stock. Some men keep 10,000 head of cattle at one time. As I came here I met 12 or 13 droves of cattle that were driven from this country and about as many horses. Uncle Samuel's Andrew Cox [Andrew McClure Cox] has been living in Texas for seven years. He came here with a large family and no capital, but he has cleared 1,000 dollars a years for seven years.

No more at present but

   Your husband until death,
   Levi P. Cox

Solomon Cox, twin son of Solomon Cox and Naomi "Amy" Hussey Cox, was born about 1761 in Orange County. He was mentioned in a certificate issued to his mother by Cane Creek Monthly Meeting for removal to New Garden Monthly Meeting January 6, 1781. He was married about 1781 to Martha Dixon, according to "Joseph Cox, Ancestors and Descendants." He removed to Virginia and was in residence there in 1789.

It is believed that he lived in Knox County, Kentucky in 1800. On December 6, 1806 he received a certificate from Cane Creek Monthly Meeting to remove to Tennessee. The certificate mentioned "son, Joseph." Solomon Cox and children were received by Lost Creek Monthly Meeting, Jefferson County, Tennessee, January 31, 1807.

Solomon Cox reappeared in Kentucky in 1807. In 1808, 1809 and 1810 he lived in Ross County, Ohio settling near Chillicothe where many other Cox families had relocated. Martha Dixon Cox died there about 1810.

He was listed in the 1810 tax of Ross County, according to "Early Ohio Tax Lists." Solomon Cox was remarried there August 23, 1812 to Mrs. Mary Dixon Williams, widow of Jeremiah Williams and daughter of Jesse Dixon according to Robert Alan McAlear. It is speculated that she was a sister to Martha Dixon Cox.

Solomon Cox, accompanied by two sons and two daughters and their families, moved by wagontrain to Cooper County, Missouri, arriving there in the fall of 1818 [1828?], according to "Joseph Cox, Ancestors and Descendants."

He was mentioned in the will of his father written September 9, 1819 in Hocking County, Ohio as co-executor with his mother and was to receive one-half of the livestock included in the estate. William Dixon and Solomon Cox attended to the probate of the will in Hocking County July 3, 1820.

Solomon Cox and Mary Dixon Williams Cox deeded land in Hocking County to Merida Kesterson December 14, 1822, according to Hocking County Deed Book A, page 336. They were involved in another land transaction there June 13, 1828, according to Hocking County Deed Book B, page 88.

During the same period there were other land transactions involving members of the Cox family, according to Robert Alan McAlear: "Nicholas Cox and wife, Rebecca Cox 'of Ross County' deeded land to their son Jacob Cox May 31, 1819, according to Hocking County Deed Book A, page 71. John Cox and wife Lydia Cox deeded land to John Wilkerson and Jacob Wilkerson March 8, 1823, according to Hocking County Deed Book A, page 328. Nathan Cox and wife Ann Cox 'of Ross County' deeded land to Robert Comer May 2, 1826, according to Hocking County Deed Book A, page 535."

Mary Dixon Williams Cox died about 1829 in Ray County, Missouri. Solomon Cox appeared as a widower in the 1830 census of Ray County. The family was enumerated as:

"Cox, Solomon white male 60-70
      white male 15-20
      white male 15-20
      white female 15-20
      white male 10-15
      white male 90-100
      white female 80-90"

It is believed that the "white female, 80-90" enumerated above was Naomi "Amy" Hussey Cox who had accompanied her son in the move to Missouri. She probably died in Ray County at age 88-plus.

Solomon Cox was married for the third time December 20, 1831, at the age of 64, to Temperance "Tempa" Hendricks in Ray County. They were influenced by his son Joseph Cox to move to a more remote part of the county about 1834. When Livingston County, Missouri was organized in 1837 with land from Ray County the Cox families found themselves in the new county. Solomon Cox operated a mill there. He appeared there in the 1840 census as the head of a household.

On October 4, 1844 Solomon Cox and Temperance "Tempa" Hendricks sold 160 acres of land in Rich Hill township. Since he did not appear in the 1850 census of Livingston County, it is assumed that he died during the decade.

Children born to Solomon Cox and Martha Dixon Cox are believed to include:

Olive [Aled?] Cox born about 1785
Joseph Cox born September 13, 1789
Rebecca Cox born about 1794
Michel Cox born in 1798

Children born to Solomon Cox and Mary Dixon Williams Cox are believed to include:

Solomon Cox, Jr. born about 1814
Stephen Cox born in 1816
John Cox born about 1818
Isaac Cox born about 1820
Amy Cox born about 1823

No known children were born to Solomon Cox and Temperance "Tempa" Hendricks Cox.

Olive [some researchers show Aled and some Alice] Cox, daughter of Solomon Cox and Martha Dixon Cox, was born about 1785, probably in Guilford County, North Carolina. She was married July 14, 1806 to Thomas Elison in Knox County, Kentucky. Of this couple nothing more is known.

Joseph Cox, son of Solomon Cox and Martha Dixon Cox, was born September 13, 1789 in Virginia, probably Montgomery County, according to Stanley Medford Cox in "Joseph Cox, Ancestors and Descendants." It is believed that his parents removed to Knox County, Kentucky about 1800. In 1806 they removed to Jefferson County, Tennessee and in 1808 lived in Ross County, Ohio settling near Chillicothe.

Joseph Cox was married in Chillicothe to Ama "Amy" Baker, daughter of Dr. Amos Baker and Mary Prescott Baker September 15, 1808 on her sixteenth birthday. She was born September 15,1793 in North Carolina, according to her 1850 census enumeration.

Dr. Amos Baker operated a large pottery at Chillicothe, and his brother Jacob Baker a brewery, according to "Joseph Cox, Ancestors and Descendants."

Joseph Cox was listed as a taxpayer in Ross County in 1810, according to "Early Ohio Tax Records." In the spring of 1818 Joseph Cox, accompanied by his father and his family; his brother Stephen Cox and his sisters, Rebecca Cox Dixon and her husband Isaac Dixon and Michel Cox Wilkinson and her husband William Wilkinson, formed a wagontrain for a move to Missouri. They arrived in Cooper County, Missouri in the fall of 1818. They built a raft and floated their possessions across the Missouri River to Bluffton, Missouri in Howard County, according to "Joseph Cox, Ancestors and Descendants."

Robert Alan McAlear, Cox family researcher, suggests that Joseph Cox and his party did not arrive in Missouri in 1818. He wrote June 17, 1983, "Hocking County deeds show Solomon and wife Mary 'both of Hocking County' selling property in 1822 and again in 1828. It is possible that they had returned from Missouri to sell property, but this does not appear logical. Also I have reason to believe that William Wilkinson and Michel Cox Wilkinson were residents of Indiana about 1826."

It is also noted that Andrew Baker Cox, son of Joseph Cox, born July 6, 1828, reported in his 1850 census enumeration that he was born in Indiana.

Mary Cox Lisle, daughter of Joseph Cox, in her ninety-first year, stated that her father moved from Ohio to Tennessee and then to the Territory of Missouri, according to a newspaper account. However she would have been only seven years old at that time, and it is believed that she confused her early history with that of her husband whose family did move to Missouri from Tennessee.

On February 9, 1831 Joseph Cox made application for letters of administration of the estate of Isaac Dixon, his brother-in-law, according to "Joseph Cox, Ancestors and Descendants." In that year Lydia Dixon and Michel Dixon chose their uncle Joseph Cox, as their guardian. The court appointed Joseph Cox guardian of the four other children, Jesse Dixon, Polly Dixon, Joseph Dixon and Solomon Dixon. The two older children, being over 14, had the legal privilege of choosing their guardian. In February 1832 the court ordered Joseph Cox to pay $14 for three coffins furnished to the Dixon family.

Joseph Cox owned a 400-acre farm near Richmond, Missouri, and in 1826 the county commissioners of Ray County [formed from Howard County in 1820] met at his home. On May 11, 1834 Joseph Cox resigned as guardian of the Dixon children, having made preparations to remove to a part of Carroll County that later became Livingston County, Missouri. The first term of the Livingston County Court was held April 6, 1837 at the new home of Joseph Cox. He was one of the first three county judges there, according to "History of Livingston County, Missouri."

"Joseph Cox, Ancestors and Descendants" relates, "The first term of the circuit court was also held at Joseph's house, and this was on July 3, 1837. At the term Joseph and Amy boarded the judge, jury, litigants, lawyers and witnesses free of charge, setting log tables in the shade of the trees near his cabin and loading them with corn pone, butter and venison. This free hotel service was repeated at the November 1837 term."

Joseph Cox is acknowledged to have been the first settler at Chillicothe, Missouri, named for Chillicothe, Ohio. When the militia was organized for the frontier community Joseph Cox was chosen colonel.

Joseph Cox appeared as the head of Household 94-94 in the 1850 census of Livingston County. The family was listed as:

"Cox, Solomon 61, born in Virginia
Ama B. 58, born in North Carolina
Nica J. 16, born in Missouri
John W. 7, born in Missouri"

Texas had been admitted to the Union in 1845, and Joseph Cox was influenced to move there by his son Solomon Benjamin Cox. Joseph Cox sold most of his land to his sons Abel Cox and Isom Cox in the fall of 1851 in preparation for the move. He was accompanied in the move by his sons Solomon Benjamin Cox and John Cox and his daughter Malinda Cox Shriver and their families. They arrived in Bell County, Texas in the latter part of that year and took up land there. Some of the land of Joseph Cox later lay in Coryell County, Texas when it was organized. His original farm of 600 acres near Nolanville, Texas was later incorporated into Ft. Hood.

Ama "Amy" Baker Cox died in April 1855, and Joseph Cox expressed his loneliness in a letter he wrote to his son, Isom Cox and his wife, Elizabeth D. Littlepage Cox the following year:

    "Bell County, Texas

September 28, 1856 Dear son and daughter:

I take the present opportunity to write you a few lines to let you know I am well and hope these few lines will find you all enjoying the same like blessings, thanks be to God for all His mercies toward me.

The connection is all well here and has been all this summer. The health of the country is good.

I received your letter yesterday dated August 29th which gave me great satisfaction to hear from you and to hear you were all well at the time you wrote. It was the first letter that I have got from you in about 3 years, and never had got one before and it was answered immediately. William never has wrote to me but once. I haven't got a letter from Abel in two years or more and I began to think you all had forgot me. It is a great satisfaction to me to hear from you if I can't see you and to hear how you are all getting along. I want you to answer this letter and let me know what you all are a following for a lively hood.

Tell Allen Lile I have been looking for a long time to get a letter from him. I wrote to him before Andy left here and haven't got an answer yet. You wanted to know how I was a living. Little John and me is a keeping house by ourselves and it is a very lonesome life but of course it won't last me very long for I am a getting very old and feel ready and willing to go any time my Lord calls me to go. If none of you think enuf of me to come to see me I hope you all will be prepared to meet me in a better world.

Benjamin Cox has gone from home and won't be back for three weeks. When he comes I will get the recipe for making Bee Bate [bait] and send it to you. I have forgot how to make the Bate so I will wait until Ben comes home. I don't know what you want with it in that old country for I had thought there would be no bees in there now.

Stock brings a good price here. I was offered one hundred and twenty five dollars for a mare I have when she was three years old. She had a colt that is hard to beat. Now my pork hogs is in good selling order now and the market is just beginning to fall. Tell Andy that hogs has done a good deal better this summer than they did last summer. Tell Andy I have had no chance of selling off his bee gums. They still stand right where he left them and I expect they are full of honey for bees is very rich.

Tell Andy Cox and Dr. Ireland I think they have forgotten their promise to me that they promised to write to me as soon as they got back and Andy promised to write and let me know about things there, and they have been there over one month and I have got no letter from them yet. I am a thinking they are so well pleased with their move they have forgotten me altogether. I think you had better come out here, Isom, and winter one winter and get your health for I think this is as healthy a country as there is in the world. Since Andy come and went back again I am more and more anxious for you to come and see the country and live with me one year as well as Andy. Fix up your old gun and come and stay with me this winter and lets have a buffalo hunt for they are coming in by the hundreds.

The Indian agent has come in from Ft. Belknap, he says the prairies is lined with them within forty and fifty miles of here. There have been some seen within 15 or 20 miles of here. Isom, I have heard you had an heir at your house but haven't thought enough of it to tell us anything about it or to write its name.

Jane Cox has a fine son. Charles Littlepage is out here. He says your connection in Travice County is well. James Littlepage is married to Marthy Knight and she is as big and fat as Elizabeth.

Tell Andy that the reserve bill has been lifted off all the lands west of the Brazos and those that took preemptions in the reserve got those lands at 50 cents an acre and 18 months to pay for their land and after the first of next March all vacant lands west of the Brazos in the reserve will be in the market at 50 cents an acre.

So no more at present but I remain your loving father till death.

     Joseph Cox
     To Isom and Elizabeth Cox"

Joseph Cox kept his promise to relay the bee bait recipe in a letter written about a month later:

Dear son and daughter:

I take the present opportunity to write you a few lines to let you know I am well at present and hope these few lines will find you well. The connection here is all well and has been all this season. The health of the neighborhood is good. I don't know of any sycness in this neighborhood in any case.

You wanted to know how to make Bee Bate. Go buy you a vile [vial] of the oil of cloves and one of cinnamon drops and one of sweet anis. You will find them at the drug store. Then take half pint of honey, then take a broom straw and dip it in one of your viles and then put it in your honey and so on until you dip your straw in every one of your viles, then put a litte more anice than the rest. Then put a half pint of water and shake well, then your bate is fit for use. Then get you a handful of grass and fasten it together. Then take your mouth part full of your bate and blow it on the grass. Then put it on a stick or brush for them to suck at. That is good for we just tried it.

We got home day before yesterday from a hunt. We were gone a short time. We killed about twenty deer, and got a fine chase of honey. We found a place where bees were very plentiful and would have got a good deal more but the weather was cloudy and windy nearly all the time we were gone.

I want you to write me immediately as soon as you see these few lines and let me know what you all are doing and what you are a following for a lively hood.

Wheat is worth from $1.50 to $2.00 a bushel, corn a dollar a bushel, stock of all kinds bring a good price. We had two lite frosts but nary a one hard killing frost. Sweet potato tops is green yet. The beans is a blossoming yet and curing pork is worth from $5 to $6 per hundred. Tell Andy that I have got 15 cents per pound for my bacon and lard at home.

So no more at present, but I remain your loving father till death.
