"James De Havellande [son of Thomas], born in Gernsey circa 1440; settled in 1471 at Poole, co. Dorset, of which place he was maior A.D. 1494-1498. He built ye north aisle, and eudowed a chantry in St. James' Church, Poole, where he and his wife are buryed, as appeareth on a brass in the said chantry." [90]

Note by genealogist Eduardo Haviland Hillman, F.S.G.: "It is stated by the late John V.S. de Havilland, Esq., (York Herald in 1879) in his 'Chronicle of the de Havillands' that the founder of the family in England was James de Havilland (Mayor of Poole) second son of Thomas, Sieur de Havilland, of Guernsey. This statement has no foundation, as regards the better known Somersetshire branch, whose ancestry the author of the 'Chronicle' sets out to prove, nor as regards the American branch." [1]

James father John Sieur established James in Poole DOR in 1471. James established the English line of De Haveilland. He was Mayor of Poole in 1494 - 1498 - 1502 - 1506

JAMES DE HAVELLAND, (16.) Esq, second son of the SIEUR THOMAS DE HAVILLAND (15), of Guernsey, was the founder of the family in England. The father as before mentioned, for his services in the recovery of Jersey, was rewarded in the Patent of Edward IV . (Doc. U.) And, in order to avail himself of the privileges thus conferred, he established his second son at Poole in Dorsetshire, of the subsequent prosperity of which he may justly be considered the founder ; for by his wealth, energy, and ability whilst living, and his charities when dead, he raised it from a place of small importance to be a flourishing and wealthy port. He established there a valuable commerce, particularly with Normandy and Spain, which continued to flourish for a century after his death.

He added, at his sole charge, the north aisle to the church of .St. James, which he dedicated to the Virgin. Here he endowed a chantry ; and this, which was known as the HAVELLAND-aisle, continued to be the burial place of his descendants as long as any of the name continued to reside in the town. He was born about 1440, and married, before leaving Guernsey,
