About Justice John Louis Taylor

John Louis Taylor was the first Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court. He was the only foreign Chief Justice in North Carolina state history. He served in North Carolina House of Commons; became a Superior Court judge and when elected to Supreme Court, and turned his law practice over to his brother-in-law, William Gaston. He came to America at age twelve years and studied at William and Mary College. Taylor was a Sixth and Tenth Grand Master of Masons of North Carolina. He stayed in office at the Supreme Court until his death.
