Confederate Army Records: Kader Lawson Keaton served as a Private in Company G of the 1st Battalion, Georgia Cavalry of Confederate Georgia Troops. This was Captain Lamar's Company from McIntosh County, GA known as "The Lamar Rangers" and as "The "Savannah Mounted Rifles." Kader also served as as a Private in Company H of the 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry when it was fomed in January 1863 by merging the 1st and 2nd Battalions. The 1st and 2nd Battalions had served along the Georgia Coast. There does not appear to be a history of the 1st Batttalion. The men were from the counties of Effingham, Screven, Liberty, Bulloch, Lamar, and McIntosh. This 5th Regiment was sent to Mississippi and placed in Major General Joseph Wheeler's Cavalry Corps, serving under Brig. Gen. William W. Allen and Brig. Gen. Robert H. Anderson. The unit participated in the Atlanta Campaign, the defense of Savannah, and the campaign of the Carolinas. On April 26, 1865, after the Battle of Bentonville it surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. The field officers were Colonels Robert H. Anderson and Edward Bird, Lieutenant Colonel R.J. Davant, Jr., and Major William H. Wiltberger. Eli Moore, husband of Caroline Keaton (daughter of Kader Keaton) also served as a Private in the same unit.
