Kaia Henriette Karoline Sundstad was born 28 Jul 1882 in Lee Township of Norman County, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Elias Andres Kristofferson and his wife Gjertrude Agnethe Abelsdatter. She is believed to be their youngest child. She was baptized 24 Aug 1884 at the Bethania Lutheran Church, rural Perley, Minnesota. She was confirmed at Bethania 30 Oct 1889.

The 1910 census shows that one, Kaia Henriet Karoline Sundstad was a common school teacher in Newborg Township, Bottineau County. She was 23 years old and was a boarder with one of the families whose children attended her school.

She married Thorvald Olson on Christmas Day 1910 at the Mouse River Lutheran Church, Landa, North Dakota. Thorvald was a farmer in Bottineau County, North Dakota.

Thorvald and Kaia became the parents of six children as follows: Agatha Bernhoft born 9 Nov 1911, Ruth Sundstad 14 May 1913-15 Jun 2003 (Edward Charles Peery 30 Mar 1902-7 Aug 1992), Sylvia born 8 Jun 1915, Everett Viktor born 18 Jul 1916 and Agnes Thelma born 5 May 1920. Kaia passed away in 1938. Thorvald passed away at Moorhead, Clay, Minnesota 28 Jan 1962.
