Kalin (16), from Carletonville, Gauteng, was stabbed in the neck while on holiday in Ramsgate with her family on Tuesday 18th December 2005.
Kalin and her best friend, Zelne Maritz (17), were walking on a side road, near a nightclub in the CBD at 03h15 when two males accosted them. One of the attackers stabbed Kalin in the neck with a kitchen knife while trying to steal her handbag. Police at the time said the force of the stabbing broke the handle off the knife. Zelne tried in vain to save Kalin, but paramedics declared her dead an hour after the stabbing.

- During the trial, Thembisile Pilisi (19), and Vukile "Chico" Sinama (20), had pleaded not guilty. At the end of October 2006, Judge Jan Hugo, sentenced them to life imprisonment after being found guilty of murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and attempted robbery with aggravating circumstances.

- Hugo sentenced the two cousins, who pleaded not guilty, to life imprisonment each for the murder, to 15 years for aggravated robbery and ten years for attempted aggravated robbery
