About Edward Kamakau Houston
Kamakau was an illegitimate son of the King of Hawai'i, King David Kalakaua. His mother Pauahi was a court dancer for the King and traveled the world with him.
Kamakau, lived and was educated away from Hawai'i. He would regularly visit his first cousin Martin Martinson the manager of Kahuku ranch in Ka'u.
Family members who remembers Kamakau's visits to Ka'u report that he looked pure Hawaiian but spoke perfect English with a strong "haole" accent. He was physically deformed in his face but was extremely kind and pleasant to be around. He once gave Martin and Mary Martinson a pillow with the royal insignia of his father that came from the palace.
It was also reported that the children in the family would cry when he would leave. He was reported to be a very kind man and loved by his Ka'u 'ohana.
My mother Mona Ishibashi, remembers sitting on his lap when he was a very old man and she a little girl. She also remembers the "nice" black vehicle that would bring him to Ka'u. She also remembers the pillow.
