Bernhard Bodenheimer was one of five children of the couple Karl Zacharias and Reline / Relina Bodenheimer, nee Wolff, who had married in 1890 in Hamburg, the birthplace of his wife. [1] Both came from traditional families have their roots be traced through many generations. Especially the Bodenheimer family played a very prominent role in the Jewish community in the Darmstadt / Starkenburg area. Thus, the grandfather of Bernhard Bodenheimer, Herz Bodenheimer, was instrumental in the founding of the "Israelitische Religionsgesellschaft Darmstadt" and belonged to their first board.
