Bernhard Bodenheimer was one of five children of the couple Karl Zacharias and Reline / Relina Bodenheimer, nee Wolff, who had married in 1890 in Hamburg, the birthplace of his wife. [1] Both came from traditional families have their roots be traced through many generations. Especially the Bodenheimer family played a very prominent role in the Jewish community in the Darmstadt / Starkenburg area. Thus, the grandfather of Bernhard Bodenheimer, Herz Bodenheimer, was instrumental in the founding of the "Israelitische Religionsgesellschaft Darmstadt" and belonged to their first board. But other members of the family took important roles in the local community and also engaged financially in the construction of the Darmstadt Synagogue in 1873.[2] This was possible because it was the grandfather with the established wholesale business in 1868 succeeded for cereals and groceries to lay a secure economic foundation for the large family. In addition to the import of tea and coffee, which was further processed in its own roasting, they increasingly took up domestic agricultural products in the trade. For many years also the Hessian military belonged to the large clientele of the company. [3]

What precise inheritance regulation had been made at the time after the death of the company founder in 1902 could no longer be determined with certainty. But after the death of Herz Bodenheimer the company was probably continued by the sons together, later by Simon alone. [4]

It can not be ruled out that Karl Zacharias Bodenheimer, as a brother of the new owner, continued to be active in the company - his then address in Darmstadt was significantly identical to the business address of the company - and thus in Hamburg, the port city, in a large part of the colonial goods was handled, his future wife, the Hamburg had met in Reline Wolff.
