It needs a clarification, whether the official family name was Muru or Moro. According to a family memory, brothers Karl and John (Juhan) kept their Estonian family name Muru til the end of their lives and used Moro-name in everyday documents. The family name was transferred officially into Moro-form by their mail descendants. There hasn't been any proof for that. Might be also vice versa.
Matti Muru märkmed/ notes (from Gustav Muru): Karl sõitis Kanadasse 1893-1894 (?). Karl travelled to Canada in 1893-1894 (?) - vale, esimesed Eesti asukad saabusid 1899!/ wrong, first Estonian settlers arrived in 1899!
Teiste Alberta Kanada emigrantide seas on mainitud "- 4 Moro brothers - Carl - John - + Henry - + Jaan" Mari Mottuse käsikirjast "Life & weddings of the first Estonian pioneers her in Eckwille at 1900" July 1967 a. lk 3. http://www.albertasource.ca/abestonians/pdf/Kingsep_account.pdf
In the early 20th century, Barons, Medicine Valley, and Stettler were the principal Estonian settlements in Alberta. However, other small locations throughout Alberta attracted Estonian settlers. One such location was Peace River, a tract of land in northern Alberta largely uninhabited by settlers.
Brothers Karl and John Moro emigrated from Estonia to Canada in 1904. In his native Estonia, Karl had once belonged to the Tsar's household infantry unit. Accompanying the two brothers were Karl 's wife, Mary, and their three sons, August, George and Oscar. Initially Karl and John acquired homesteads three miles north of Eckville. Tragically Mary suffered a stroke in 1921 and passed away three years later.
Karl built a flour mill in 1923. A short two years later, his sons Oscar and August formed a partnership and purchased the flour mill from their father. In 1928 Karl and his son George moved to the Peace River area where Karl opened a modest market garden while his son found employment at a local sawmill. Oscar sold his portion of the flour mill business and followed his family north. Here he opened a new flour mill and later a farm machine shop. Karl continued operating his market garden until he passed away in 1959. Source: http://www.albertasource.ca/Abestonians/people/first/moro.html
Üheks lisasissetulekuallikaks olid veskid. ... Suurima jahuveski asutas Karl Moro samuti Medicine'i jõe paisule.
The Estonians in Canada before World War I: ... Major changes took place between 1908 and 1910. By then, most settlers had acquired a measure of financial strength and no longer had to find jobs off the farm. Additional income could be earned in milling. Fritz Kinna learned how to build dams and work with concrete while working on railway bridges, and used his new skill to build a mill on the Medicine River. Another mill was built by Juhan Mäesepp. Mart Sestrap had a small windmill, and Karl Moro built a large gristmill and dam on the Medicine River. Later it was converted to steam where business grew, and later still it supplied electricity to the entire town of Eckville". Source: http://www.eesti.ca/ajalugu/en/1.html
Kiri Peacc Riverilt, Kanadast
Selle tõttu töötaski läinud aastal Peace River'i raudtee täie koormatusega. Suureks nuhtluseks raudteeliikumisele on Peace River'i madalik-org, mis asub tervelt 1000 jalga muust maapiimast madalamal — hiigeljõe töö aastate jooksul. Peace River'i veskit jäi juhatama Oskar Moro. Eduard Moro ostis omale uue jahuveski Edmontoni linnast 50 miili ida poole, kus asub palju venelasi, nii et äri ajamiseks on tingimata tarvis mõista vene eelt. Ed. Moro vana mölder — inglane, kelle Ed. Moro omaga kaasa võttis uude asukohta, lahkus sealt mõne nädala pärast, kuna ei saanud keelega hakkama. Praegu on Ed. Moro jahuveskis ,.keeletargaks" Henry Rosenthal.
