Accident No. 8. — An accident occurred at No. 5 shaft, Calumet branch of the Calumet and Hecla mine, December 30th, which resulted in the death of Charles A. Tunander, a trammer, at the 40th level.

An inquest was held before Coroner Sowden.

Mike Vagren, a partner of the deceased, testified: "I was at the 46th level, No. 5 shaft, tramming today. We had a full car waiting to be dumped, and the skip was coming up from the 49th level. Charles, the deceased, went to look to see if the skip was full, and if the skip was not full he would stop it and dump the car. I heard him holler and my partner said "Charles has fallen down the shaft!" I did not see him fall into the shaft. He had a light on his hat and the plat was all right.

Sacris W. Grangroot, also a partner of the deceased, testified: "l am a trammer at No. 5 shaft, Calumet mine, and was tramming today at the 40th level. We had brought a full car out to the shaft. The skip was coming up from the 49th level, and Charles went to look down the shaft to see if the skip was full. He walked quite fast, and when he reached the shaft, he fell right upon the skip; the skip being a little below the level. I saw him fall but did not see him after he fell. I ran across the shaft and rang the bell to stop the skip. Charles hollered and then I rang again. Charles did not stumble or fall before he reached the shaft. The skip did not stop until it was hoisted up between the 40th and 41st levels."

Captain Patrick Kerns was examined, and testified as follows: "I was at the 41st level No. 5 shaft this afternoon and heard some one call for help down the shaft. I took hold of the bell line to stop the skip and had no sooner done so than the skip went by and stopped about 50 feet above the 41st level. I went up to where the skip was and found the deceased with his feet under the skip and his arms over the top, on the rock. He died soon after he was taken out."

The following verdict was returned: "We, the jury, find that the deceased, Charles A. Tunander, was killed by accidentally falling in No. 5 shaft, Calumet mine, and being caught by the ascending skip, at the 46th level, on the 30th day of December, 1897."

In another column is published a letter from Mrs. Tunander acknowledging the recipet of $1,000 paid her by Van Orden Bros., general agents of the New York Life Insurance company. Mr. Tunander insured his life last August and only paid one years premium, viz: $49.40 and for which his family now recieve $1,000. Mr.Tunander having met with a fatal accident in the Calumet mine last December. It is the duty of every man to take out some kind of policy- Mr. Tunander's was a 20 year endowment- in order that his family may not be left wholly at the mery of a cold world.
