About Karl van Beethoven
- OnThisDay Today 217 years ago, on 4 September 1806, Beethoven's nephew Karl van Beethoven was born. He was the son of Beethoven's brother Kaspar Anton Karl and his wife Johanna, née Reiß. Beethoven harboured a strong dislike for his sister-in-law and when his brother died in the autumn of 1815, Ludwig van Beethoven took over the guardianship of his nephew. In addition, he tried to exclude Karl's mother from the guardianship and a protracted legal dispute ensued. Beethoven's overwhelming affection and the tensions in the family exerted increasing pressure on the nephew. Finally, on 6 August 1826, he tried to shoot himself. Fortunately, the wound was not life-threatening and Beethoven decided that his nephew should pursue a military career. Karl then joined the infantry regiment Erzherzog Ludwig No. 8 stationed in Iglau at the end of 1826. There his life was more orderly than before. He first became a sub-lieutenant, later an officer. In 1832 he left military service, married and subsequently ran an estate in Niklowitz as a tenant farmer. In 1836 he moved again to Vienna, where he led a normal bourgeois life.
