About Karolina Ancuta Wolodowicz

Karolina Domeykowa [naci%C3%B3 en Saczywki, Ancuta, antiguo Gran Ducado de Lituania (actual Bielorrusia), + Ancuta 1832; h.l. Ancuta y Aneutowa Wolodkowicza].

Karolina Ancuta (married to Ignacio Domeyko´s father, Hipolit Domeyko) lived in what at that time was the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (current day Bielorussia), in an alliance with Poland. The borders at the time were quite different from what they are today. After the death of Hipolit Domeyko, it is possible that Karolina remarried around the year 1812. According to accounts in Belarus, she remarried Jan Beresniewicz, a relative of her sister´s husband. The Beresniewicz family belonged to the Russian nobility. This fact has not been reconfirmed.

The Ancuta family belonged to the highest nobility of Lithuania and Poland. The nobles were called Szlachta, a denomination that was born in the Middle Ages. On her mother's side, Karolina Ancuta descended from the Wolodkowicz family, an ancient noble family originating from the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Scholars argue whether the family name derives from Wolodko (born 1420), grandson of Gedymin Grand Duke of Lithuania (1275-1341), or from his descendant Grand Duke Wolodko. Marcin Wołodkowicz (1510-1595), the son of Wolodko and his wife Racza, is the common ancestor of all members of the Wołodkowicz family.

The name Szlachta continued to be used throughout the centuries in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth until the beginning of the XX Century. The Szlachta nobility were mostly landowners and had specific privileges in both countries. Some members of the Szlachta were richer than others, having turned from only landowning to banking, and industry. But the privileges were the same for all Schlachta, no matter their wealth or economic status. Karolina was widowed quite young when her oldest son was about 10 years old and Ignacio 7 years old.
