About Kate Bullock Scales
She was sister of Euphemia Hamilton Henderson who m. Alfred Moore Scales. In other words, two sisters m. two brothers, the younger brother marrying the older sister. She was the last Henderson to be born in and to occupy "Ashland," home of Richard Henderson and built by his father Samuel. After Alf's death, she moved to Danville, VA to live with "adopted" daughter Kate Lewis Scales and her husband John Noble Wyllie. She died there of old age at 84. During the Civil War, she stayed at Confederate Headquarters in Richmond and was more than once under Union fire. For years her grave at Green Hill Cemetery had gone unmarked. However, in 2001 the Madison-Mayodan chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (UDC), with the help of a Scales family member, erected a granite marker over her grave.
