    • THE YOUNGER BRANCH OF THE BRERETON FAMILY OF IPSTONE, MALPAS AND SHOCKLACH.
  • The founder of this branch was Sir Randle, or Ranulph, de Brerton, only son of Sir William de Brerton VI., of Brereton, by his second wife, Margaret, daughter of Sir Henry Done, of Utkington, Cheshire. He married Alicia, daughter and heiress of Sir William Ipstone, of Ipstone, Cheshire, and assumed the name of Sir Randle Brereton, of Ipstone, at her father's death in 1399. her mother was Maude, daughter and heiress of Sir Robert de Swinnerton, Knight, of Staffordshire. She was a veritable pluralist in husbandship: 1, widow of Sir John Savage, of Rock Savage; 2, widow of Sir Piers Leigh, the ancestor of the Leighs of Lyme; 3, widow of William de Ipstone; 4. widow of Richard Peshall. By her Sir Randle de Brerton had two sons and one daughter; 1, Randle, his heir; 2, William, the founder of the first offshoot of the Malpas branch, viz.; the Brereton family of Burros, or Burosham, Denbighshire; 3, ---, wie of her cousin, Randall Spurstow, of Spurstow.

By her he had two sons : 1, Randle Brereton, founder of the Eccleston and Wettenhall branch : 2, Owen Brereton, of Bar Hill, the ancestor of Brereton of Coddington. His second wife was Katherine, daughter of William Butheley, of Eaton, Cheshire. By her he had three sons: 1, Randle, his heir, of Ipstone and Malpas; 2, Ralph Brereton, of Iscoyd Castle, Shropshire, who had one daughter, wife of John Holford ; 3, Bartholomew Brereton, of Grafton, who had three sons : a, Bartholomew ; b, John ; c, Humphrey, of Malpas, the historian of the War of the Roses.
