About Katherine Gookin Porredge
Birthplace: Dennehill, Kingston, Kent, England
Death: Died October, 1612 in Addisham, Kent, England
John & Catherine Gookin removed to Appleton & purchased "Appleton Farms" which had been owned by Monastery of St. Mary the Virgin & St. Thomas the Martyr, in the adjoining Parish of East Langdon. John & Catherine remained living there for 15+ years. In Feb 1586, John Gookin bought the estate "Little Betteshanger" in Parish of Northbourne. Two years later, alarmed by the advent of the Spanish Armada, Jan 16, 1588/9 the Queen issued a proclamation asking for a loan for the defence of the kingdom. John Gookyn of Norborne, Esq. subscribed 50 pounds sterling which was double the sum advanced by most of the other gentlemen subscribers. Also, upon the death of John's father in June, 1599, his fortune was increased by inheritance of Bekesbourne estate. About a year later, John purchased the Manor of Ripple that was part of the ancient possessions of the Abbot & Convent of St. Augustine at Northbourne originially granted 1542/43 to he Archbishop Cranmer. Ripple Court thus became the family seat for three generations.
