About Khase Dvoira Gervis
Chase Levitan was born in Kovna, the daughter of Israel Meyer Levitan, who was the Mayor of Kovna. The family owned timber yards and were very wealthy. She married Rabbi Gerson Gervis and had 5 sons., Phillip, Israel,Berl and a son who died at birth and a son who was killed at war, his wife (Feiga Gervis Dershansky) and children were imprisoned in Siberia. Bobbe Chase kept them alive by sending suit lengths of fabric to the prison guards. Her estate bought them out of Siberia. Chase never knew if they were alive! T Dershansky's live in Israel today. Berl changed his name to Levitan because he loved his mother and took her maiden name. He sold tallism, religious boos and he lived with his mother. No one kept wills because they were superstitious. Chase sold trousseau Irish linen. She supported the family financially whilst her husband studied Torah. She owned a magnificent house in Berea, Johannesburg, where many well known people visited.
