A Logan County, Arkansas resident, William Oscar Springer, recalls his life in Logan County where he was born in a small hamlet called "Happy Hollow" in 1873. "This was a wilderness full of wild turkey, deer, wolves, black bear, fox, wildcats and a virgin forest of large pine. At night you could hear all kinds of hideous noises, made by these wild creatures. About 1876 a man by the name of STEGALL put in a large sawmill, ran (sic) by steam. The mill was on the McAmis farm. They built a little town of cabins, for the workmen to live in. Those who came to work were as follows:
Thomas Wisely, the engineer (Tammy's note: this is the name of Kissiah Finney's husband)
Tom Finney (Tammy's note: possible Kissiah's brother, John Thomas Finney)
Marion Finney (Tammy's note: possibly Kissiah's other brother Francis Marion Finney)
Jap Finney (Tammy's note: possibly Kissiah's other brother, Jasper Newton Finney)
Note: Kissiah Finney Wisely and her husband Thomas Wisely lived and died in Logan County, Arkansas and were there at the time of this historical anectdote. It is highly probable that William Oscar Springer is referring to the several sons, daughter and son-in-law of Miles Elbert Finney. Years later, in 1910, Miles's son, Tillman Elbert Finney and his sons were also working at a lumber mill in Pike City.
The list of sawmill workmen concludes...Gil Workman, Tom Quarie, Ted McMath, Joe Greenway and George McAmis.
A side note: Miles L. Finney, brother to Marion, Jasper and John Thomas was a "mill hand" according to the 1900 Scott County, Arkansas Federal Census. Parts of Scott County later became Logan County, Arkansas.
Enjoy.
