In 1842, H.S. Lombard succeeded Pretorius as commandant for the town and district of Pietermaritzburg.

Catharina Levina van Aardt (baptised 19 Feb 1804) d.o. Willem Adriaan van Aardt and Maria Susanna Triegard married Hermanus Stephanus Lombard in 1821.They lived at Smoordrift, Riet River East in the district of Somerset. They moved from there in May/June 1838 and crossed the Gariep at Buffelsvlei (now Aliwal-North) on 11.06.1838. H. S. Lombard was the leader of his trek. They settled in Natal where he played a prominent role in the society being commandant and member of the Natal Volksraad.In the middle 1840s they moved to the Transvaal region of Marico/Schoonspruit where the farm Welgevonden was alotted to him on 23.08.1847
