Krishnavelli Pillay (1983 - 2002)
Brief overview:
The bodies of Krishnavelli (19), Levern Naidoo (16), and Rashida Abdulla (16), were found in a sugar cane plantation in Folweni, Umbumbulu, on October 17th 2002. The girls had been shot dead on October 16th.
The motive for the killings appeared to be that the girls had witnessed Koogan Thevar (19) and Nkosinathi Gumede (18) stealing a firearm and assaulting Jaysee Ramiah, where they had been staying.
Ramiah had provided the girls with accommodation, but told them to move out because he had disapproved of their lifestyle. Thevar, Gumede, and accomplice Nevellyn David (22) were convicted on three counts of murder and one of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. Thevar and Gumede were also convicted of robbery with aggravating circumstances. "Koogan shot Rashida in the head twice while she was standing five metres from him. Levera fell down and tried to run away, but Gumede ran after her and brought her back. He twisted her right arm and brought her to Koogan, who shot her two or three times in the head. Krishnavelli was still in the taxi, and Koogan shouted at her to come out. Nevellyn grabbed her, holding her by her hair. He shot her in the head, she fell to the ground and he shot her in the chest," said Maurera. Koogan then made David, Gumede and Maurera drag the bodies into the field. Thevar then swore them to silence.
All three had played an active role in killing. Note: A number of killings have happened, whereby the victims are dumped in cane plantations in the KwaZulu-Natal area.
