Was a Lance-Corporal who served with the South African 3rd Transvaal Scottish Regiment during World War II. He was awarded the George Medal in most unusual circumstances. The recommendation came from a German officer after an Italian ship carrying prisoners of war was torpedoed off the Greek coast. Friedlander stripped and swam ashore with a rope, so that many lives were saved which would have been otherwise lost.
